I have been very busy at home, getting all sorts of work done round the house as well as sewing and family history, which is just about taking over my life.

If you are looking for some stitching to do and aren't a member of my group, have a look at the Textile Experimental Group blog where I have been posting some ideas to fill your time. Also, look at some of the other branch sites such as Skipton where they were doing some interesting work before the lock down. If you want more structured work, Dionne Swift and Anne Brookes are doing some online workshops you can join in. Feel free to comment at the bottom of the blog page and if you have my email address you can send me photographs of your work to post here for other members to look at.Textile Experimental Grouphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05131653871939404023noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11626331848554486.post-44578898315946873382020-01-29T14:55:00.005+00:002020-01-29T14:55:49.344+00:00January MeetingToday was a members day so not so many of us present. Everyone was working hard despite the coolness of the room as the village hall are having problems with the boiler!
I missed the December party as I had a nasty bug and was confined to barracks but everyone who attended enjoyed it.
I also missed the November meeting as I was on holiday in India. What a spectacular place of stitch inspiration! I had a wonderful time and can recommend it to anyone interested in going. Because I was away, I missed the workshop with Helen Barnes making Bronte Needle Rolls. There were several of these being finished off today so here are a few of them.
There were a good number of members there and a mixture of abilities. Everyone was making a straight piece of peyote stitch which then wrapped around a plastic form to make either a piece of jewellery or as part of a scissor keeper. Not everyone did the workshop, a few were doing their own stitching. A sales table will now be available each month and it can include items that you can sell or donate to the branch.
Kate Andre, Chris Gray, Midori Matsushima and Kate Slaughter all provided us with excellent workshops and plenty of work to do.
Moira and Christina did printing and dyeing with Kate Andre and boy were they busy. They left with piles of samples and a nice workbook to keep them in. Diane worked with Chris Gray and they produced some lovely Sashiko style pieces some of which were printed, some machine stitched and some hand stitched. Some interesting ideas to take away.
Anita had a quiet weekend hand sewing with Kate Slaughter. Sixteen ladies produced small landscapes and flower designs using textured thread and stitches.
As always, the food and service was excellent and the weather kept fine for us to look round the animals and the walled garden. As weekends go, this one takes a lot of beating.Textile Experimental Grouphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05131653871939404023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11626331848554486.post-21541125163244642652019-07-17T17:40:00.002+01:002019-07-17T17:40:39.670+01:00June MeetingI managed to get here for the whole of the afternoon and be able to listen to our speaker Anne Brooke. What a treat that was. There was loads of lovely work to look at and her talk was just as interesting. I didn't get chance to chat with many members as I was quite late but everyone seemed to be busy working.
Next years fees will be £83. That will include: Guild membership to HQ, Regional subs, Branch subs and teas/coffees for each meeting next year, so there is nothing to pay when you come to the meeting.

Here are a few photographs I took of Anne's work with her permission.
Once again I was only able to call in at the meeting for an hour and it will be the same in June. I didn't take any photo's at the meeting because everyone was in the process of cutting out their fabric for the bag they were making on our Member's day. Hopefully there will be some finished bags in June to show you.
A good day was had by all at Regional Day as always. Two really excellent speakers and lots of retail therapy as well as a lovely lunch. The competition was perhaps not as well supported by members this year but my goodness did the Young Embroiderers show us the way! They almost completely covered the table with entries. The only annoying thing was, I switched my phone off and forgot to switch it back on again to take photographs so I haven't any to show you. However I am sure if you do Facebook you will find some pictures on there. One day I might decide I have time to join Facebook but not in the near future I'm afraid.Textile Experimental Grouphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05131653871939404023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11626331848554486.post-90907297995569430222019-04-29T11:56:00.000+01:002019-04-29T11:56:23.086+01:00April MeetingListening to comments today, last months speaker and workshop by Jessica Grady, was enjoyed by all who attended. Unfortunately, there wasn't any finished pieces on display this month so I couldn't get any photographs to show.
This month's workshop was with Elizabeth Almond who gave us an Introduction to Whitework. I know many of the members do enjoy doing whitework, pulled and drawn threadwork and other forms of traditional hand embroidery but all those there today thoroughly enjoyed what Elizabeth brought for us. It is good to go back to traditional stitches and remind oneself of them, it is surprising how well they sit within a piece of modern embroidery. We also had a couple of visitors who were interested in the stitching and hopefully are now interested in joining the group.
However, I did manage to attend the Guild AGM in Newcastle. It was a lovely day out, all the train times worked and the Assembly Rooms were a short walk from the station. What a lovely building, it took you back to the Regency days of balls and concerts. The meeting however was bang up to date with powerpoint presentations and fascinating speakers. In the morning Scott Gordon heron, head designer from Hand and Lock gave us a brief history of the company and some insight into the work the company does, from designing military goldwork to fashion pieces for top designers. They have even designed badges for the pilots of the first commercial flight into space!
During the afternoon we heard from Dr. Nigel Hurlstone who took us through his recent work 'Men Do Cry' and what a journey that was. I don't think anyone came out of that room not feeling ragged and drawn, some were nearly in tears. The work looks at a ward of men in a hospital, all who have cancer and their experiences together, particularly after lights out. Have a look at his website and the work called 'Sleepers'.
The Guild is just in the black this year and membership fees for next year will be held at £38. A summary of the day can be found on the website with copies of the various speeches.
Four regional branches put on displays of their work and the Needle Points North banners were prominently displayed. There was also a display of all the entries for the 2018/19 Guild competition 'Life's Rich Pattern' and very spectacular they were. Look out for them at the Knitting and Stitching shows.
It was half term and I had my daughter staying and we were out and about all week (lots of tea and cake included in that).
The speaker was Steffi Glaves on miniature crochet and she brought a sales table of jewellery, silverwork and enamelling. I caught a glimpse of it as she was setting it up and it looked very interesting. I will report back here when I get the chance to speak to members who were there.
Our speaker today was ME. I gave a talk about the Distant Stitch Sketchbook course that I finished last year. I brought all my work and put some of it on slides to talk through. It's amazing how much work you do on these things and you don't realize it until you put it all together. I have put the link to my blog which I needed to do to complete the course, in the section at the side if anyone wants to look at all the photographs and writing that I had to do. Unfortunately it starts with the last module and it is quite a way back to the first one I'm afraid.

We could choose our own or pull one out of a hat, which I think most of us did. There were fabrics and threads available if we needed them and we could either work to a 7inch square or something of our own choice. I pulled Sorbello stitch out of the hat which was something I have not done before. We also got under way with our travelling books. The books were distributed and we now have to cover them, make a bag for them to travel in and put our first pages in our own book. All to be done by the February meeting. We have set a topic of 'Circles' for our first pieces of work so I combined that with the Sorbello stitch to start the cover for my book.
We had another enjoyable meeting and have now got most members signed up to doing a 'Travelling Journal' so the sketchbooks are on order and we will be able to get started next month.
Eileen has just been on a workshop with Alicia Merrett at the Royal Hotel in Bridlington and this wonderful quilted cityscape was the result.
We had borrowed two of the guilds Folio's for October's and November's meetings and I have to say, they are so much better than when we borrowed them about ten years ago. Very well presented pieces and quite a lot in each one. Here are just a few of them.
We had a swift AGM and moved on to look at the Regional Chairman's Challenge that Christina has been putting together.
The challenge was to produce a piece of work of a given size that represented your branch. Each section of these leaves has been worked by a member of Ryedale and represents the diverse work that members do, all of which joins together to make our Branch.

While Christina was finishing this off, Colleen had several people crocheting her little sheep.
The Chairman has set us a new challenge - Travelling books. I know some Branches have been doing this for a while now but we hope to get started in the next couple of months - I'm looking forward to that.Textile Experimental Grouphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05131653871939404023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11626331848554486.post-78994822462640263792018-07-29T14:21:00.002+01:002018-07-29T14:21:20.169+01:00July MeetingNot as hot a day as we have been having lately, some welcome rain in the last couple of days. The Chairman reported that the exhibition had gone really well, be covered all our cost and made a small profit and hopefully aquired 4 or 5 new members, which is what it is all about.
Today's speaker was Melita Butterell from the Durham Cathedral Broderers who showed us some of the work that the Broderers do. If you have ever been to Durham Cathedral you will have seen some of the lovely pieces of work they have done some of which have been designed by Malcolm Lockhead. They are displayed all around and there are guided tours available on certain days. That together with the new space for the St. Cuthbert pieces makes a visit to Durham a worthwhile day out.
Below are some of the samples she brought with her for us to look at.
Wall to wall sunshine and cricket on the field - so very English.
We had a steady stream of visitors on Saturday despite the football (or maybe because of it), Sunday was quieter but still a good number. There was lots of work for people to view, a very popular tombola where every winner received a hand made item, the Rose Bowl Challenge to judge and plenty of cake.
The Rose Bowl Challenge was an A5 book cover. Each entry had a little bag and visitors were requested to put a coin in the bag of their favorite piece of work. The winner was the bag with the most coins in (not the highest value) and all the proceeds went to St Martin's House Childrens Hospice. There was a good amount of money in total in the bags and the winner was our chairman Angela, seen below with the rose bowl.
Here are some of our Mystery Stitchery pieces. There are more but still in the making. Every month we purchased a pattern sheet that had been designed by Loreen and we made it up in our own way then put the pieces together to make either a book or a box or whatever pleased you. The money we made from the sale of the pattern sheets will go to HQ towards the upkeep of the collection.
This last piece was given to the Branch by a lady from Snainton. The story behind it is that all the ladies of the village of West Heslerton were given 1p worth of threads to make a patch for this quilt. This was in the 1940's, if anyone out there knows anything more about this quilt we would love to hear from you.
Don't forget to come and see us at Snainton Village Hall, YO13 9BG, Saturday and Sunday 7th & 8th of July between 10am and 4pm. There will be a super sales table, tombola and lots of cake as well as plenty of embroidery for you to look at.
Our speaker this month was Anne Menary who gave us an amusing talk about 'The Fabric of the Universe' and how she had got into the universe as a topic for embroidery. Her sense of humour in her cards and pieces of work is really good and we all had at least a smile if not an outright laugh as some of her musings. For more information and a look at her work, visit her website at anne@annemenary.com.
I took a few photos of Anne's work but the website offers much more.
We had two wonderful speakers in Serena Partridge and Nicola Jarvis. Serena brought some of her tiny hand stitched shoes and gloves for us to look at and Nicola told us how her May Morris birds came into being. As ever, lunch was delicious and there were several interesting stalls for us to spend our money on. The competitions were well supported especially the young embroiderers whose work on William Morris designs was extremely good. I won another bag in the raffle, I think this is the third one I have won and each has been amazing. I have made lots of things from the items I have received and some have gone on to be sold at Branch events to raise money.
I'm afraid I didn't get photographs of the competition winners but they will be on the Regional facebook page, however I have got photos of the other entries and to say that these didn't win shows what a high standard there was.
Don't forget our exhibition on the 7th and 8th July in Snainton village hall, YO13 9BG from 10am to 4pm. There will be lots more beautiful embroidery, a sales table, tombola and of course refreshments.
However I understand that Helen Birmingham was very interesting and the workshop with Jan Dowson was enjoyed by all who participated. There were some lovely pieces on display at this months meeting but as always, I forgot to get some photographs.
Our speaker this month was Vivien Stamford who spoke about Found Fabrics and the Antarctic Project. Viv has collected lots of pieces of fabric from the beach at Bridlington, some of which she brought to show us. With these pieces she has produces some wonderful work, a lot of it based around the Antarctic Expeditions of Scott and Shackleton. She has done a lot of research into the projects and her work is very thoughtful.
The Branch members are all working hard towards our exhibition on the 7th and 8th July in Snainton Village Hall. We will be open from 10am to 4pm and entry is free so don't forget to come along. There will be plenty of tea and cake so that is a good excuse.
I shall be missing the next two meetings unfortunately as we have some good things happening so the blog won't get updated until after the May meeting.

Today, Eileen gave a workshop making these lovely jugs, the pattern for which is from Stitch magazine. From the feedback I got, everyone enjoyed doing these and had lots of fun with them.
A number of the members attended our Christmas Lunch on the 13th January at the Crossways Hotel in Pickering. As always the food was lovely and the company excellent.
At our meeting today (27th) we had the Stamford Bridge Tapestry Society some of who joined us for the morning to do stitching and demonstrate the stitches they use in this beautiful embroidery. There will be twelve panels when they have finished depicting the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066. The style of the work is similar to that of the Bayeux tapestry but it won't be quite that long! As with the Bayeux Tapestry, there are some delightful figures fitted into the story. Everyone loved the little fisherman sitting on the bridge fishing while the battle raged around him. In the afternoon Heather joined us to give a brief description of the battle and Sue told us more about the Society and how they had all got together.
Thank you's were said to all those who stewarded at Nunnington Hall for our exhibition which went down very well. The management at the Hall were very pleased with it and with the number of additional visitors it attracted.
Our next exhibition will be on the 7th and 8th of July at Snainton Village Hall. This is the Branch bi-annual event so there will be lots to buy on the sales table, lots of tea and cake and tons of lovely embroidery and textile work to look at.
Here are some photos of the items they have for sale to raise funds for the fabric, threads, etc. needed to produce it. Each of these figures is taken from the tapestry.
It was a bit chilly sitting at the top of the house but we had wrapped up warm and weren't too uncomfortable. Apparently it wasn't as busy a day as usual but there were a lot of events on all over the county. However, we had a steady stream of visitors from all over the world including Germany and Canada as well as from all over England. Several of them had a go at Colleen's lazy daisy stitches and took a piece of work home with them. I demonstrated Angelina fibres and how to use them. Everyone who visited us was very complimentary about the work on display and it did look lovely, very well arranged around the two rooms and a corridor. I didn't take any photographs I'm afraid, but you can still go and have a look at it yourselves before it finishes on the 17th December.Textile Experimental Grouphttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05131653871939404023noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11626331848554486.post-86542052593676816282017-10-29T15:10:00.001+00:002017-10-29T15:10:06.819+00:00October MeetingWe had a really good meeting today, lots more work coming in for the exhibition at Nunnington Hall and lots of little white decorations that everyone had done to hang from the tree branches that Christina provided.
I managed to get a bit closer so you can see a few of them a bit better.

We had a really good talk by Janet Browne who told us all about how she got involved with her style and topics that she works in. She brought lots of her birds and maps for us to look at as well as sketch books and samples. We had a lovely time afterwards looking through them all.
Here are some of the pieces she brought and lots of eager hands rooting through them.
It is a lovely big room with plenty of light although the ceiling is high which makes it a bit noisy but we have all seemed to settle in. Today was also our AGM which we went through as quickly as possible so that we could listen to our speaker, Andrew Clay who gave a very enjoyable talk on The Royal Jewels. Going back to Queen Mary, he explained the difference between the Crown Jewels, jewels that belong to the Royals and the Queen's private collection. The photographs were stunning, the amount of jewellery worn by Queen Mary and Queen Alexander was incredible and the dresses were just as impressive. A really good talk that kept everyone discussing it afterwards. Shame he didn't have any samples to show us! Andrew is the Manager of Woodend Creative space in Scarborough and does two or three different talks and they are all very good.
We asked Andrew to judge our annual Rose Bowl Competition, the topic of which was Pantomime. There were a number of entries but the winner was Nikki Brown with her beanstalk interpretation. I would love to have taken some pictures but didn't have a camera with me but I hope to get some from other members to put on this page as soon as I can.
We are all bringing together work for the exhibition at Nunnington Hall which is coming up very soon. The dates for the exhibition are on the side panel, please come and look round a lovely house and see all the work we have been doing.
The Mystery Stitchery is moving along, people are getting the hang of what we are doing and are making plans for how to put the various pieces of work together when they are all finished.
